'Why the industry must pull together'

With Financial Planning Week and GetAdvised underway, we reflect on Jeff Prestridge and Will Greenwood’s support for the importance of educating consumers on the value of advice.

This week sees the launch of IFP's Financial Planning Week 2013 (FPW), coinciding with unbiased.co.uk continued campaign on the value of advice, GetAdvised. Speaking at the press launch for FPW, Jeff Prestridge spoke about his passion for independent financial advice and how post RDR the value of advice has never been so important.

Jeff argued that the importance of financial planning and professional advice is imperative for consumers now more than ever. He wanted to stress to the industry how attitudes towards taking advice must be altered and how the industry must come together to do this: “The financial planning community must become more proactive and spread the word,” he said.

He also argued that the industry needs to educate those consumers who fear the cost of advice, so they can realise that the “overall value totally exceeds the costs”. He then talked about the need for advisers to share their ‘good news’ stories and positive stories about when professional advice had really helped a consumer find a solution and improved the quality of their life.

Joining him in advocating the importance of consumer financial planning was former British Lions star Will Greenwood. Will worked in the City before becoming a professional rugby player. He spoke about how the industry needs to “blow away the smoke and mirrors" for consumers who are often unsure how to proceed with managing their finances and how the industry must not underestimate consumers “willingness to learn”.
